RE at Holy Cross

As part of the Nottingham Diocese, Holy Cross school teaches RE through the Come and See programme. This is a Catholic Primary Religious Education programme for Foundation, Key stage 1 and Key stage 2 and was published in July 2012. The programme has been written by  group of experienced diocesan advisors and was trialled initially in schools in England and Wales. The programme is based on the theological foundations of the Second Vatican Council, the Catholic Catechism and the revised RE curriculum directory and includes the Catholic  Attainment levels.

There are 3 topics per term. In the Autumn term, Judaism is taught and another faith in a subsequent term ranging from Hinduism, Islam and Sikhism. Each topic follows the format of Explore, Reveal and Respond. The topics in Come and See follow the Liturgical cycle of the Church year and include study of scripture, sacraments and Church traditions.

Collective Worship

Holy Cross has an active Collective worship programme. Prayer is at the heart of our school day, with prayers said regularly throughout the day. The Chaplaincy Team encourage and support our younger children in planning and leading weekly class liturgies. In addition to class worship, every Monday, the whole school gathers to start our week together. We take this time to think about Sunday's gospel and how we can live that message out through the week. Friday is our time to gather with parents to celebrate our children's achievements during the past week.  Also, we gather weekly to worship through song and music. We are very fortunate to have two musical parents who volunteer to help us in leading this worship.  Our school works closely with the Parish of Holy Cross and attend, lead and participate in masses frequently. The Parish priest also visits the school to have masses, to which the parishioners are invited.  Parishioners also volunteer to come into school on a weekly basis, to teach our older children how to pray the Rosary.
